Equipment

Sushi mat (or parchment paper)

Instructions
Prepare the Sushi Rice
-
Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch.
-
Cook the rice with the water in a rice cooker or on the stovetop according to package instructions.
-
While the rice is cooking, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl and stir until dissolved. Once the rice is done, fold this mixture into the rice gently, then allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
Prepare the Filling
-
Slice the smoked salmon into thin, even strips. You can also use pre sliced smoked salmon.
-
Slice the avocado into thin strips.
Assemble the Sushi Rolls
-
Lay a sheet of nori on the sushi mat, shiny side down. (Cover the mat with plastic wrap for easier cleanup.)
-
Wet your fingers with water to prevent sticking, then spread about 1/2 cup of sushi rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top edge.
-
Arrange a few strips of smoked salmon and avocado horizontally across the center of the rice.
-
Starting from the bottom, use the mat to roll the sushi tightly, pressing gently as you go. Wet the top border of the nori to seal the roll.
Cut the Rolls
-
Use a sharp knife dipped in water to slice the roll into 6-8 pieces, wiping the knife clean between cuts to ensure neat slices.
Serve
-
Arrange the sushi pieces on a plate and serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side.
Enjoy your delicious Smoked Salmon and Avocado Sushi!
Additional Tips
-
For an extra layer of flavor, try adding a bit of lemon zest or a few sprigs of dill alongside the smoked salmon for a fresh, zesty twist.
-
Sushi can also be made with alternative fillings like cucumber, mango, or even bell pepper for added crunch and color.
In the end, sushi-making is all about creativity and joy. Don't worry about achieving perfection; your unique rolls will be delicious no matter what. Enjoy the process as much as the final bite!
