Chicken Burritos

Recipe

Servings: 4 (1 large burrito per person)

Preparation Time: 15-20 minutes (chopping, seasoning, and prepping ingredients)

Cooking Time: 15 minutes (cooking chicken and veggies)

Ingredients

  • 4 large flour tortillas

  • 500g (about 1 lb) raw chicken breast (cut into thin strips)

  • 1 cup cooked rice (optional, season with lime and cilantro)

  • 1 cup black beans (optional, cooked and drained)

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a blend)

  • 1 cup lettuce (shredded)

  • 1/2 cup sour cream

  • 1/2 cup salsa

  • 1/2 cup guacamole

  • 1 small onion (sliced)

  • 1 small bell pepper (sliced)

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tsp paprika/ Cajun spice

  • 1 tsp chili powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Equipment Needed

  • Skillet or frying pan

  • Knife and chopping board

  • Mixing spoon or spatula

  • Tongs (for flipping the burritos while toasting)

Instructions

Prepare the chicken filling

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet or frying pan over medium heat.

  • Add the sliced onion and bell pepper. Sauté until softened (about 3–4 minutes).

  • Add the raw chicken strips to the skillet. Sprinkle with paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper. You can add beans now and mix evenly or you can add beans later at the time of layering the wrap.

  • Cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is fully cooked and no longer pink inside.

Prepare burritoes

  • Heat each tortilla in a dry skillet for about 20 seconds per side to make them soft and pliable.

  • Place a tortilla on a flat surface. Spread a layer of sour cream and guacamole in the center.

  • Add cooked chicken, rice, black beans, shredded cheese, lettuce, and salsa.

  • Fold the sides of the tortilla inward, then roll it tightly from the bottom up to form a burrito.

Optional step

  • Toast the wrapped burritos in a skillet for 1–2 minutes per side for a crispy exterior.

Tips

  • Marinate chicken in lime juice, garlic, and spices for 15–30 minutes before cooking for juicier chicken.

  • Don’t overfill the tortillas to prevent tearing while wrapping.

  • Add hot sauce, jalapeños, or pickled onions for extra zing!

  • You can use only Cajun spice for seasoning.

  • You can cook thick chicken breast slices and shred them once cooked

  • You don’t have to use salsa and guacamole inside the wrap, but keep it on side
