Description
This two-tier cake is one of the most elegant creations I’ve made, designed for a Kathak dancer to celebrate her 40th birthday. The smooth marble effect on the fondant perfectly matched the grace and elegance of the birthday girl. Inside, the cake featured layers of rich chocolate and light vanilla sponge, filled with a delicate rose-flavored buttercream to add a subtle hint of floral sweetness. I crafted golden *ghungroos* (anklets used in Kathak dance) and a fondant dancer cutout to highlight her passion for dance. Fresh red roses adorned the top, bringing a touch of sophistication. The edges were finished with buttercream icing, creating a soft lace effect that added to the cake’s refined charm.
Story
This cake was for my amazing friend who absolutely loves to dance. When her husband called to invite us to her birthday party, I immediately offered to make her a cake. I wanted it to be special and spent hours brainstorming ideas. I kept coming back to her passion for Kathak—a dance form she started after having kids and is still pursuing. As a mom, I totally get how hard it is to find time for yourself, let alone follow a passion. I admire her so much for sticking with it.
The cake-making process was no joke! One of the toughest parts was making the tiny bells for the *ghungroos* (the ankle bells). They all had to be the same size, with little cuts to make them look real, and they had to stay stuck to the band without falling off. After hours of working on them and finally assembling the cake, the next challenge was getting it safely to the party.
We had almost an hour’s drive ahead of us. I was confident in the structure, thanks to all the dowels I used, but I was still nervous. My husband was even more stressed since he had to pack it up and drive carefully. We packed the cake, and I held onto it the whole way while he drove super slowly.
When we arrived and I opened the box, my friend was completely shocked. She couldn’t believe I had captured her love for Kathak in the cake. Her reaction made it all worth it. The party itself was amazing—we danced our hearts out, ate delicious food, and enjoyed the summer night breeze under the stars. It was such a fun and unforgettable birthday celebration.
I’m so happy with how the cake turned out, and seeing how much my friend loved it made all the hard work worth it!
